What’s an ESE Pod?

The coffee ESE pods resemble biscuits made from 7 grams of ground and compacted coffee, sandwiched between two rice paper filters that are fused together with heat.

This amount of coffee is equivalent to what is typically used to make an espresso in a coffee machine at a bar. Hence, using these pods provides a simple and convenient way to prepare an espresso.

These pods are designed to be used with specific coffee machines, whether they are small pod-specific machines or home and professional espresso machines.

Once the coffee has been brewed, the ESE pod can be disposed of in the organic waste bin as it is completely biodegradable and does not contain any glue or chemical substances.

Technically, these pods are referred to as ESE-44 mm. The term "ESE" stands for "Easy Serving Espresso", and the number 44 represents the diameter of the pod.

There are also pods available in other sizes, such as the 55 millimetre ones, which are commonly known as "Senseo" pods. These pods, however, do not compress the coffee in the same manner (some refer to them as soft pods), resulting in a lighter coffee rather than a true espresso.

In contrast, Nespresso offers what they call "pro capsules" that have an aluminium casing instead of rice paper. Despite the different shape, these capsules are not biodegradable as they are made from non-biodegradable materials.

Each ESE pod is individually wrapped in an aluminium casing to preserve the flavour and aroma of the coffee.
